Former Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, 84, was admitted to a hospital on Sunday. His office has not disclosed his condition.
McConnell’s spokesman, David Popp, said in an emailed statement that McConnell “is receiving excellent care” but did not specify the reason for the hospitalization.
In recent months the Kentucky senator has regularly moved around the U.S. Capitol in a wheelchair, often with help from staff. He has faced several health challenges in recent years, including a widely reported episode in 2023 when he froze and was unable to speak for nearly 30 seconds during a press conference.
McConnell has also experienced a series of falls, one of which led to a concussion and an absence from the Senate of nearly six weeks. He has a longstanding limp caused by partial paralysis of a leg after a childhood bout of polio.
He announced in 2024 that he would step down from Senate leadership and in 2025 said he would not seek another six-year term. After more than four decades in the Senate, McConnell is due to leave office at the end of this year.
