Israel’s military says it killed Izz al-Din al-Haddad, a senior commander in Hamas’ military wing, in a strike in Gaza City on Friday. The army described Haddad as one of the architects of the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks that sparked the wider Gaza war and said he was among the last high-ranking planners still at large.
Israeli officials say Haddad took over his role after the killing of his predecessor, Mohammed Sinwar. On Saturday, members of Haddad’s family confirmed his death to The Associated Press.
The announcement came as a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas remains in place. Negotiations over key elements of any longer-term agreement — including demands for the disarmament of Hamas — have stalled, leaving the truce vulnerable to collapse.
