Mali’s army says unidentified armed groups it labeled “terrorists” have launched attacks on multiple military positions in the capital and elsewhere in the country. In a Saturday statement the army said fighting remained ongoing. Witnesses and journalists in Bamako reported two explosions and sustained gunfire near the main military camp and at several other sites across the military-ruled country. Gunfire was also heard close to Mali’s principal airport in the capital. A photograph circulated showing a Malian soldier taking position with his weapon during an assault on the main military base in Kati, outside Bamako. Further details are expected as the situation develops.
