Here’s where things stand on Monday, December 1.
Fighting
– Kyiv regional Governor Mykola Kalashnyk said casualties from a Russian attack on Kyiv on Sunday rose to one dead and 18 wounded.
– In southern Kherson, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin reported at least two killed and seven wounded in further Russian strikes.
– Donetsk Governor Vadym Filashkin said at least two people were killed and five injured in Russian attacks on Saturday.
– Russia’s Belgorod regional operational headquarters said a Ukrainian drone attack killed two men in the region.
– Russia’s FSB claimed Russian forces shot down 309 drones over the Donbas using the “Donbas Dome” electronic warfare system over the past week, TASS reported.
Peace talks
– US and Ukrainian officials described talks in Florida on a deal to end the war as “productive.”
– US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said negotiations remain difficult but expressed optimism, noting progress.
– Rubio said talks would continue later in the week when US envoy Steve Witkoff travels to Moscow, adding that Russia must be part of any agreement.
– Ukraine’s chief negotiator, National Security Council secretary Rustem Umerov, praised US support: “US is hearing us, US is supporting us, US is walking beside us.”
– First Deputy Foreign Minister Sergiy Kyslytsya called it “a good start” and praised Rubio’s leadership.
Diplomacy
– President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he thanked European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for attention to strengthening Ukraine’s resilience amid strikes on infrastructure and the energy sector.
– German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius warned Germany must prepare for shifting alliances, saying the “geopolitical chessboard is changing rapidly.”
– Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told his Iranian counterpart in Tehran that Turkiye supports peace efforts between Russia and Ukraine.
Weapons
– Ukrainian Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal announced Ukraine and Norway will jointly produce Ukrainian drones after signing an agreement with Norwegian counterpart Tore O. Sandvik.
Regional security
– Vilnius airport temporarily halted operations due to suspected balloons in its airspace, part of a series of European flight disruptions some linked to Russian drone activity.
– Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oncu Keceli expressed concern about attacks on two vessels in the Black Sea that reportedly involved Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s shadow fleet of sanctioned oil tankers, saying the incidents in Turkiye’s Exclusive Economic Zone posed serious navigation, safety and environmental risks.
