Two people were killed and nine others injured Saturday afternoon outside the Barus and Holley building at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, officials said. The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. ET near the building that houses the School of Engineering and the Physics Department, where final exams were taking place between roughly 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.; access to the building is controlled by card swipe but university leaders said increased foot traffic was likely because of exams. Providence Fire Chief Derek Silva said two victims died at the scene. Eight wounded people were being treated at Rhode Island Hospital and were described by city officials as in critical but stable condition. A ninth person left the scene and suffered a non-life-threatening injury from a fragment rather than a direct gunshot; it was unclear whether that person was hospitalized. Authorities said the suspect fled on foot, exiting the Hope Street side of the building, and Deputy Police Chief Timothy O’Hara described the individual as a male dressed in black. Police released a short video of someone believed to be the shooter but said the footage does not show the suspect’s face and that there had been no confirmed sightings since the attack. A shelter-in-place order was issued for the university and nearby areas, and Brown advised students and staff to lock doors and avoid moving across campus. City and university police and the FBI are coordinating the investigation and urged witnesses to come forward. Officials also clarified earlier confusion: an individual who had been detained was later cleared and is not the shooter. Authorities have not released the identities of the victims or of the suspect. President Trump said he had been briefed and offered brief remarks expressing sympathy, and Mayor Brett Smiley said it was a day the city and state had hoped never to see.
