The Israeli military posted on X on Tuesday that it killed Gholamreza Soleimani, who it identified as commander of the Basij, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ internal security paramilitary force. The statement said the Air Force, “guided by precise intelligence from Military Intelligence,” carried out a targeted strike in Tehran that removed Soleimani, who had led the Basij for the past six years. Iran has not commented on or confirmed the claim. If verified, the death would be the most senior Iranian figure reported killed since the conflict began on Feb. 28. The U.S. Treasury lists Soleimani’s birth year as 1965. He has been sanctioned by the United States, the European Union and other governments over his alleged role in suppressing dissent through the Basij. Further details are expected as reporting continues.
