Luka Modric underwent successful surgery after fracturing his left cheekbone and is expected to be fit for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, the Croatian Football Federation said.
The AC Milan midfielder suffered the injury in a clash of heads with Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli during Sunday’s 0-0 Serie A draw at the San Siro. Modric left the field with about 10 minutes remaining and, although clearly in pain, stayed on the bench until the end without receiving treatment. Tests later revealed a fracture to his left zygomatic bone and he was operated on the following day.
Milan described the injury as “a complex, multi-fragment fracture of the left zygomatic bone” and said the operation “was completely successful.” The club did not specify how long Modric will be sidelined; only four rounds remain in Serie A. Milan added: “The club wishes Luka a speedy recovery ahead of the FIFA World Cup!”
Croatian national medical staff have remained in contact with Modric and his club. Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalic said he had spoken with the captain and wished him a successful surgery and quick recovery. “I am convinced that he will do everything to be ready for the World Cup, and we’ll provide full support,” Dalic said. “I am confident that the recovery will go according to plan and that Luka, as team captain, will lead us at another major competition this summer.”
Modric, 40, is in the final months of a one-year deal with Milan after leaving Real Madrid; the contract includes an option for another year. A protective mask may be needed should he recover in time to play in the tournament cohosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The World Cup starts on June 11; Croatia will face England on June 17, Ghana on June 23 and Panama on June 27 in Group L.
Milan sit third in Serie A, 12 points behind leaders Inter Milan, with four games remaining, leaving Modric doubtful for the club’s season run-in.
