Amazon Partners to Build New Nuclear Power Plant in Indiana

Amazon collaborates with X-energy and AEP to establish a nuclear facility in Indiana, promising clean energy and job creation.

Amazon Partners to Build New Nuclear Power Plant in Indiana

In a significant step towards renewable energy, Amazon has reached an agreement with X-energy and American Electric Power (AEP) to finance a new nuclear power plant in Indiana. This groundbreaking project is set to replace the former Breed Generating Station, a coal-powered facility in Fairbanks, Sullivan County.

Details of the New Facility

The planned nuclear plant aims to generate up to 960 megawatts of carbon-free energy, both for Amazon’s extensive data centers and the regional power grid. Though construction timelines and operational dates are yet to be determined, Amazon indicates that this facility could potentially create around 1,000 jobs during its construction phase, alongside 100 permanent positions once operational.

Advanced Reactor Technology

The Indiana facility is designed to deploy 12 Xe-100 Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). These advanced reactors, currently under development, feature innovative cooling systems that utilize air, water, or a combination of both. This unique approach is particularly beneficial for deployment in areas with limited water resources, ensuring that local water availability remains unaffected.

Historical Context and Future Implications

Interestingly, Indiana is also known for the unfinished Marble Hill Nuclear Power Plant, which halted construction in 1983 after an investment of $2.5 billion. Since then, it has been undergoing demolition since 2008. Unfortunately, specific financial details of Amazon’s agreement in Fairbanks have not been released, leaving the costs of these two nuclear endeavors unexamined.

This nuclear initiative marks the second collaboration between Amazon and X-energy, as both companies aim to establish over 5 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity across the United States by 2039. Last October, Amazon unveiled plans for the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility in Washington, which also focuses on the construction of 12 advanced reactors. However, construction for that facility is not expected to begin until late in the decade.

The Tech Industry’s Shift Towards Nuclear Energy

Amazon is not alone in its pursuit of nuclear energy; tech giants like Meta, Microsoft, and Google are also developing similar projects to supply power to their AI-driven data centers. In a recent blog post, Amazon emphasized its commitment to enhancing energy grid infrastructure as part of addressing concerns related to environmental impacts from data center expansion. Despite the long timeline for these projects, the tech industry’s shift towards sustainable energy sources illustrates a growing awareness of environmental responsibility.

As the push for clean energy gains momentum, projects like the Indiana nuclear facility exemplify how corporate investment can drive progress toward a sustainable future.
