Chili's in North Carolina Reopens After Chemical Incident
A North Carolina Chili's reopens after customers and staff suffer chemical burns from contaminated margaritas.
A Chili's Grill & Bar in Forest City, North Carolina, has reopened following an alarming incident where several customers and employees experienced chemical burns after consuming margaritas mistakenly prepared with a cleaning substance.
Incident Overview
On the morning of October 26, shortly after the restaurant opened for lunch, three patrons ordered margaritas. They reported feeling immediate discomfort and burns around their mouths after sipping the drinks.
According to a statement from the Foothills Health District, two employees who sampled the same drinks also suffered similar reactions.
Investigation Findings
The restaurant temporarily closed on Thursday as health inspectors investigated the situation. It was discovered that a cleaning chemical, mistakenly believed to be sugar, was added to the margarita mix. An employee had received the chemical from a contractor who was cleaning the restaurant's exterior and improperly stored it in an unlabelled container left in the bar area.
The health district confirmed that following the incident, the restaurant was allowed to reopen the next day as no further violations were identified. No fines were imposed, and the investigation has concluded.
Company Response
A representative for Chili’s described the occurrence as an isolated incident affecting just one restaurant in Forest City. They stated, “Our team took immediate action to support those affected and avoid further injuries. We conducted a thorough investigation and resolved the issues specific to this location.”
While the injured individuals received medical treatment, no additional information regarding their conditions has been released. The spokesperson did not clarify discrepancies between their report and the health district's count of the injured patrons.
Health and Safety Precautions
This incident raises concerns about food safety and the importance of proper labeling in food preparation areas. Chili's menu frequently features margaritas, which are typically served with a citrus-sugar rimmer in addition to the conventional salt. Ensuring that such substances are clearly marked and stored separately is crucial to prevent future occurrences.
