Discover New PowerToys Features for Your Mouse Experience
Microsoft's latest PowerToys update introduces two innovative features aimed at improving mouse usability: Mouse Button Lock and CursorHide.
Enhance Your Mouse Functionality
Microsoft has recently updated PowerToys, that free utility for Windows users, to include two useful new features designed to enhance how you use your mouse. The latest version, PowerToys 0.102, introduces Mouse Button Lock and CursorHide—tools meant to facilitate smoother text selection and reduce distractions when typing.
Streamlining Text Selection with Mouse Button Lock
Choosing a large block of text with your mouse can often feel cumbersome. Traditionally, you would need to press and hold the left mouse button throughout the selection process. If the selection extends across multiple pages or sections, this can become quite tricky.
With the new Mouse Button Lock feature, this task becomes simpler. To use it, hold down your preferred mouse button for a second or two, then release it. When you move your mouse, it will automatically select the text until you click the button again to finish.
This method offers greater versatility compared to Windows' native ClickLock feature. You can set specific buttons to activate the locking function, adjust the hold duration more precisely (in milliseconds), and determine how far your cursor can travel before deactivating the selection function. For instance, you might opt for the right mouse button with a hold duration of 1.5 seconds and a travel limit of 100 pixels.
After setting your preferences, just position your cursor at the start of the text and hold the button. As you drag your mouse, watch the text become highlighted easily. Once you reach the desired endpoint, click again, and voilà—text selection made effortless!
Reducing Distractions with CursorHide
If you find your mouse cursor obstructs your view while typing or using applications, the CursorHide feature is here to help. This function conceals your cursor as you type or if it remains inactive for a selected period.
To enable CursorHide, navigate to the Mouse Utilities section within PowerToys and toggle the options for hiding the cursor either while typing, during periods of inactivity, or both. You can set the inactivity delay anywhere from 1 to 60 seconds. For a balanced experience, I set it to hide the cursor after 5 seconds of inactivity.
Once activated, when you start typing in any application, the mouse cursor will disappear, reducing visual clutter. Move the mouse, and it reappears, allowing you to focus on your work without distractions.
Discover More Within PowerToys
The new mouse enhancements are just two highlights within PowerToys, which boasts over 30 utilities tailored to improve your Windows experience. Don’t miss out on tools like Find My Mouse, which assists in locating your cursor when it’s lost, and Mouse Highlighter, which visually emphasizes your clicks.
PowerToys is an invaluable free resource for users, ranging from beginners to advanced tech enthusiasts. I encourage everyone to delve into the various features available. Each tool can be easily enabled or disabled, allowing you to personalize your workflow and boost productivity as needed.
