The RealReal Tightens Controls Against AI Shopping Bots

The RealReal, a prominent player in the secondhand luxury fashion market, is making headlines by enhancing its bot protection system. This action aims to reduce the competitive edge that AI shopping agents might gain over human buyers.

Concerns Over AI Exploitation

This development follows a revelation from The Verge regarding the capabilities of AI agents to manipulate The RealReal’s unique item reserve feature. When a product is added to a user's cart, it is reserved for 20 minutes, making it unavailable to other shoppers. The Verge effectively demonstrated how an AI agent, using Meta's Muse, could exploit this system by continuously re-adding items as soon as the time limit expired, thereby monopolizing the purchasing window.

The RealReal's Response

In light of these findings, Chief Technology Officer Luke Friang confirmed that the company has proactively revised its defenses against such tactics. According to Friang, the new configuration will significantly impede the ability of AI-driven agents to log in, add items to their shopping carts, and complete purchases. Nevertheless, he noted that these agents would still retain the ability to access The RealReal’s inventory and guide users to specific product pages.

AI Shopping Assistants: A Growing Trend

The rise of AI technology in retail has garnered widespread attention, with major tech companies promoting these intelligent agents as personalized shopping assistants capable of handling various tasks. Meta, during its recent earnings presentation, revealed that shopper usage of its Muse app is rapidly increasing, with an average transaction value surpassing $200. In just 40 days after its launch, Muse has been downloaded by over 10 million users in the U.S., illustrating the significant investment in AI-driven shopping experiences.

Implications for Retail

The growing adoption of AI agents in the shopping sphere raises critical concerns for traditional retailers. Should customers begin to rely exclusively on these automated assistants, businesses risk losing direct contact with their clientele—transforming the dynamics of online shopping. Many retailers, including industry giant Amazon, have already taken precautionary measures by blocking AI agents to safeguard their revenue streams, particularly in advertising.

The ease with which AI can streamline the shopping process, such as automating the act of selecting luxury items, poses challenges to well-established consumer practices. Unlike human shoppers, AI agents lack the emotional considerations and decision-making delays that typically characterize typical consumer behavior, making them formidable competitors in the marketplace.

As the technology continues to advance, consumers are only beginning to understand the potential advantages of AI shopping assistants. Retailers, eager to remain relevant, find themselves in a race to adapt to this evolving landscape while ensuring that they maintain accessibility and fair purchasing opportunities for their customers.
