Ukraine Resumes Attacks on Oil Refineries Amid U.S. Support Discontent
Frustrated by perceived U.S. betrayal, Ukraine intensifies strikes on Russian oil facilities after a temporary ceasefire.
Resumption of Strikes
Ukraine has renewed its offensive on Russian oil refineries, fueled by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s rising anger over a perceived betrayal by the United States following a significant cut in support crucial for its defense against Russian aggression.
For three days, Ukraine refrained from strikes following a controversial “energy ceasefire” declared by former President Donald Trump. However, frustration escalated as Russia continued to launch attacks on Ukraine's power infrastructure.
Zelenskyy’s Statements
Zelenskyy has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the apparent shortcomings in U.S. support, specifically regarding the sharing of intelligence and the constraints on Starlink satellite services. Ukrainian Charge d’Affaires Denys Sienik mentioned that the functionality of the Starshield military communication service has recently returned to normal speeds, which remain critical for managing logistics and intercepting enemy drones.
Despite this, Ukrainian officials are still awaiting clarity from SpaceX and Pentagon representatives about previous limitations on their satellite communications capabilities. In an interview, Zelenskyy voiced his frustration, stating, “The block [on attacking refineries] is out. We’re done.”
Russian Reactions and Ongoing Tensions
Shortly after Zelenskyy's comments, a fire was reported at an oil refinery in Russia's Ryazan region, which the Russian Defense Ministry claimed was due to a significant attack by Ukraine. This incident highlights the ongoing volatility in the conflict.
This new phase of strikes aligns with the growing discontent in Ukraine regarding Trump’s recent policy shifts. His energy ceasefire proposal caught many by surprise and included a call for Ukraine to halt its attacks on Russian oil facilities and suggested a change in Ukrainian leadership.
Trump has accused Ukraine of exacerbating global energy prices while also navigating pressures from his own geopolitical actions, including tensions with Iran.
Concerns Over U.S. Support
Ukraine’s government is increasingly worried that the U.S. support they once relied on may be waning, particularly after reports of interruptions in intelligence sharing. Zelenskyy noted that some recent missile strikes on Kyiv occurred without the usual warnings from U.S. partners.
Both European and Ukrainian officials suspect that these measures could be an attempt to force Kyiv into making concessions in ongoing peace negotiations that have stalled in recent months.
Military experts warn that a reduction in U.S. intelligence and satellite support could significantly impair Ukraine’s defensive capabilities just as winter approaches, complicating their situation on the battlefield.
U.S. military officials reportedly cautioned Ukrainian counterparts that failure to cease energy-related strikes could result in the blocking of military intelligence, which was later presented as a technical issue to Kyiv. Zelenskyy remarked on the dangers of operating without U.S. assistance, emphasizing, “It would be very difficult.”
Feelings of Betrayal
In a candid interview, Zelenskyy expressed feelings of betrayal at Trump’s recent actions, describing the situation as deeply frustrating for Ukraine. As tensions between Ukraine and the U.S. appear to rise, the White House had yet to respond to Zelenskyy’s claims and the resurgence of Ukrainian attacks.
