Gov. Shapiro Calls for Focus on Healthcare and Food Aid
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro emphasizes the need for Democrats to prioritize healthcare and food assistance in the upcoming congressional session.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is calling on Democrats to make healthcare and food assistance their top priorities as they prepare to assume control of Congress in January. During an interview on NBC News' "Meet the Press," Shapiro expressed urgency in addressing key issues affecting countless Americans.
Addressing Medicaid and SNAP Cuts
Shapiro highlighted the impact of recent cuts to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), noting that approximately 510,000 individuals in Pennsylvania are losing healthcare benefits, while an additional 143,000 are facing reductions in food assistance. These cuts were enacted during President Donald Trump’s administration and Shapiro urged Congress to take immediate action to reverse them.
A Call for Accountability
In addition to restoring aid programs, Shapiro urged Democrats to hold the previous administration accountable for decisions that have harmed many families. He stated, "The Congress needs to be responsive to where voters are on corruption, and there has to be real accountability for this administration." Shapiro emphasized that Democrats need to balance multi-faceted approaches to governance, saying it can't be an either/or situation; rather, they should tackle both legislative effectiveness and accountability simultaneously.
A Legislative Agenda for the Future
As Congress gears up for its new term, Shapiro encouraged the Democratic Party to push forward with an assertive agenda aimed at reducing costs for citizens. He expressed hope that this agenda would include common-sense policies that improve everyday lives and get signed into law by the president.
Discussing the future of the Democratic Party in Congress, Shapiro mentioned Representative Hakeem Jeffries, who is poised to become the next House Speaker. He noted that Jeffries is committed to ensuring that both accountability and impactful legislation remain high on the agenda for the next two years.
Focusing on Immediate Challenges
While some Democrats may be looking ahead to the 2028 elections, Shapiro urged his party to concentrate on immediate challenges facing Americans. He stated, "We should be thinking about how to make people's lives better in 2027," stressing the need for Congress to take decisive action to support the public.
Shapiro himself, mentioned as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential race, has shown a commitment to his role as governor. When asked about his future ambitions, he stated, "I committed to run for governor, and that’s the work I’m focused on doing." He expressed his intention to advance critical policies like raising the minimum wage, signaling his determination to create tangible improvements within Pennsylvania.
