Musk Accuses Ukraine of Breaching Starlink Terms Amid Service Disruptions
Elon Musk claims Ukraine misused Starlink, while Ukrainian officials deny the allegations and explain the limitations.
Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has made strong claims regarding the use of Starlink by the Ukrainian military, alleging that they breached the satellite internet service’s terms. Musk stated that Ukraine utilized Starlink for offensive military operations, specifically drone strikes aimed at enemy forces.
Dispute Over Service Usage
According to Musk, a loophole that allowed this use was closed recently. Ukrainian officials, however, refute these claims, asserting that they did not misuse the service as alleged.
This controversy arose following accusations from Ukrainian officials that SpaceX limited their access to Starlink, interfering with essential military operations and drone missions. Starlink has been pivotal for Ukraine in terms of logistics, communication, and defense against drone strikes. Military leaders indicate that they rely on a different system called Starshield, which is controlled by the U.S. military, for offensive missions.
Zelenskyy's Statement
Musk highlighted a social media post from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in which Zelenskyy appeared to acknowledge the use of Starlink for mid-range strikes against military targets. Musk argued that this usage constitutes a breach of the service's guidelines. In response, Serhii Beskrestnov, a defense technology advisor for Ukraine, clarified the limitations of Starlink, noting that its systems only function with moving devices at specific speeds. He emphasized that Starlink could not be utilized for deep or medium-range strikes on the grounds that it lacks the required operational capacity.
Clarifications on Systems
Additionally, former Ukrainian advisor Serhii Sternenko provided further insights, explaining the need for military-grade connectivity for mobile operations. He stated that while stationary Starlink terminals could be registered, there are stringent requirements for devices intended for use in motion. Only those added to the military-controlled Starshield system would allow connectivity for moving equipment, making it impossible to use the civilian Starlink service for offensive strikes.
This situation intensified after President Zelenskyy announced that the Starlink and Starshield services had been fully restored, enabling the Ukrainian military to operate with better connectivity. They are now able to connect with devices moving at speeds over 400 km/h (248 mph), according to reports from local outlets.
Musk and Government Interactions
Musk's initial response to the service slowdown implicated the U.S. government, prompting a reaction from former President Donald Trump, who claimed he was not involved in the situation and was unaware of any restrictions imposed on SpaceX’s services. Reports later indicated that Trump had indeed encouraged Musk to lift these restrictions affecting Ukraine.
As the situation continues to unfold, both sides remain at odds over the terms and implications of Starlink's usage, especially in the context of military operations.
