Richard Norton’s Heart Attack Linked to Excess Peptide Use, Coroner Finds

The death of actor Richard Norton, linked to peptide misuse, raises alarms about unregulated therapies.

Richard Norton, a revered Australian actor and martial artist, tragically passed away last year at the age of 75 due to a heart attack, with a coroner's investigation attributing the incident to improper peptide usage.

Details of the Incident

According to the report released by Melbourne coroner David Ryan, Norton's passing on March 30, 2025, was influenced by his decision to double the prescribed dosage of peptide injections. Just two days prior to his death, he had informed a medical assistant that he was administering twice the recommended amount of CJC1295 and Ipamorelin.

Medical Interactions Leading up to His Death

Norton had sought advice from Dr. Jerzy Muchnicki on March 11, 2025, to aid in his recovery from shoulder surgery. During the consultation, he expressed fatigue and pain and showed interest in peptide therapy. After reviewing his medical records, Dr. Muchnicki prescribed the peptides after explaining the experimental nature and possible risks associated with the treatment.

On March 25, Norton reported feeling positive effects from the therapy, including improved symptoms. However, a few days later, he requested a replacement vial after breaking one, and noted that he was feeling better overall. Unfortunately, shortly after taking the additional dosage, his wife, Judy Green, reported concerning symptoms—he felt hot, flushed, collapsed, and lost consciousness.

Regulatory and Medical Concerns

This case marks a potential first documentation of a fatal incident in Australia associated with the unregulated use of peptides. The coroner’s report criticized Dr. Muchnicki for authorizing the extra peptide dosage without verifying Norton's prior reports of higher dosing through the nurse’s notes.

During the inquiry, Dr. Muchnicki expressed regret over his decision-making process and acknowledged responsibility for the incident. He has committed to halting the prescription of peptides in the future.

Peptides and Their Risks

Peptides—small protein chains often promoted as miracle cures or performance enhancers—have gained a foothold in the wellness community, especially through the influence of social media. Despite their enticing promises, they can pose serious health risks, particularly without professional supervision.

Coroner Ryan recommended that Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration impose stricter regulations on unapproved peptides to protect consumers. In the U.S., while specific peptides are used for conditions like diabetes and obesity under FDA approval, a vast market exists containing unapproved alternatives, often marketed misleadingly.

In the wake of this unfortunate event, the Department of Health and Human Services has recently permitted the production of certain peptides by compounding pharmacies, despite ongoing concerns over their safety and efficacy as raised by scientific reviewers.

Honoring Richard Norton’s Legacy

Beyond his roles in film, where he faced formidable opponents like Chuck Norris and Jackie Chan, Norton was also recognized for his contributions behind the scenes as a trainer to numerous Hollywood stars, including Ben Affleck and Margot Robbie. His career encapsulated significant achievements both in front of and behind the camera.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical need for caution when exploring peptide therapies and other unregulated treatments. Appropriate medical guidance is vital to ensuring safety and efficacy.
