United Airlines Introduces Spotify Streaming in Seatback Displays
United Airlines is rolling out a new Spotify app for seatback displays, offering passengers personalized streaming aboard flights.
In-Flight Entertainment Reimagined
United Airlines is taking in-flight entertainment to new heights with its innovative partnership with Spotify. Passengers can now access their Spotify accounts directly through custom seatback displays, enabling them to stream their favorite playlists, libraries, and video podcasts while soaring at 35,000 feet.
Powered by Starlink
This exciting new feature is made possible by Starlink’s satellite Wi-Fi, which is being integrated throughout United’s fleet. With the introduction of Starlink, the traditional limitations of in-flight entertainment systems are being transformed. Gone are the outdated plastic tubes and pre-loaded content; now, flyers can stream music and video content live from the internet, akin to their experiences at home.
A Vision for Personalization
Mark Muren, United’s managing director for product marketing, shared insights on the decision to create a personalized entertainment experience. Last year, the airline began with plans to preload some Spotify content onto seatback screens but quickly pivoted towards a model allowing passengers to log in to their own accounts.
“It’s supreme, perfect personalization in that it’s that customer’s actual account, all of their material available there,” Muren explained.
Starlink's Game-Changing Connectivity
Grant Milstead, United's VP for digital, emphasized the critical role played by Starlink’s extensive satellite network in powering this initiative. With over 11,000 satellites in low Earth orbit, Starlink offers quicker, more reliable internet connectivity compared to traditional providers. This allows passengers to enjoy a seamless streaming experience without interruptions.
“Without Starlink, we couldn’t generate that living-room-in-the-sky experience,” Milstead noted.
An Expanded Vision for Streaming
United's collaboration with Spotify marks the beginning of a broader strategy. Passengers will soon be able to stream music not only through seatback displays but also on their mobile devices. Plans are in motion to include additional third-party streaming apps, with the Spotify integration serving as a foundational model for this initiative.
“I can imagine a world where really any platform that customers are accustomed to using in their living room…there’s room for that at United,” Muren said.
Trends in In-Flight Connectivity
United is not alone in its goal for enhanced in-flight connectivity. Several other airlines are following suit by adopting Starlink technology, including American Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Lufthansa, Air France, and British Airways. Delta Air Lines is teaming up with Amazon’s LEO project, while JetBlue continues to utilize Fly-Fi powered by Viasat. As the demand for faster and more reliable Wi-Fi grows, the industry is set for a technology overhaul.
Staying Competitive
Despite the rapidly evolving technology landscape, United aims to maintain an edge with superior passenger experiences. Milstead recognizes that while many airlines will have fast Wi-Fi, the mobile app and personalized seatback screen experience could differentiate United from its competitors.
“Starlink being a differentiator for United is a moment in time,” he admitted. “We know that fast Wi-Fi is coming for every airline.”
